Ingredients
  

Dough and Filling
  • 16 sheets phyllo dough
  • 1 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 3 cups apples peeled and diced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups walnuts or pecans chopped
  • 1 cup maple syrup

Method
 

Preparation and Baking
  1. Peel, core, and dice apples. Toss with lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract.
  2. Finely chop the nuts and mix with a bit of cinnamon.
  3. Brush a 9×13 baking dish with melted butter. Lay and butter 8–10 phyllo sheets.
  4. Add a layer of the apple and nut mixture.
  5. Continue layering 3–4 phyllo sheets with butter and alternating fillings. Finish with 8–10 phyllo layers.
  6. Cut the unbaked baklava into diamond or square shapes.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45–50 minutes until golden and crisp.
  8. Warm maple syrup slightly. Pour over hot baklava as soon as it comes out of the oven.
  9. Let it sit for at least 2 hours before serving.
