French Onion Beef Casserole

Ingredients
  

Beef and Onions
  • 1 lb ground beef preferably lean
  • 2 large yellow onions sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp thyme dried or fresh
Casserole Base
  • 2 cups beef broth low sodium
  • 1 cup French bread cubed
  • 1 cup Swiss cheese shredded
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese shredded

Method
 

Prepare the Beef and Onions
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add sliced onions and garlic to the skillet, cooking until onions are caramelized, about 15 minutes.
Assemble the Casserole
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the cooked beef mixture with beef broth, salt, pepper, and thyme.
  3. Layer the cubed French bread in the bottom of a casserole dish, then pour the beef mixture over it.
  4. Top with shredded Swiss and Gruyère cheese.
Bake the Casserole
  1. Cover the casserole dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
