Prepare the Beef and Onions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Add sliced onions and garlic to the skillet, cooking until onions are caramelized, about 15 minutes.
Assemble the Casserole
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, combine the cooked beef mixture with beef broth, salt, pepper, and thyme.
- Layer the cubed French bread in the bottom of a casserole dish, then pour the beef mixture over it.
- Top with shredded Swiss and Gruyère cheese.
Bake the Casserole
- Cover the casserole dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
