Prepare the Mixture
- In a mixing bowl, combine the mashed sweet potatoes, cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Add the egg and milk, and mix until well combined. Stir in the chopped green onions if using.
Fry the Hushpuppies
- Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat until hot.
- Using a spoon or small scoop, drop spoonfuls of the mixture into the hot oil.
- Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
- Remove the hushpuppies with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
