- Heat olive oil and butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add onion, carrot, and celery. Sauté until soft and golden.
- Add garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Add ground beef and pork. Cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Season with salt and pepper.
- Pour in red wine and let it simmer until mostly evaporated.
- Stir in tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes. Add crushed whole tomatoes and bay leaves.
- Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally.
- In the last 30 minutes, stir in milk and adjust seasoning to taste.
- Remove bay leaves before serving.
